Great Video on how to stuff a KONG

Many of you already know I am anti- Dog Bowl, and use interactive toys as the way to feed my furry family. My favorites are KONGs and this video nails the process!

As for why I don't like food bowls check out my previous post on why!!!

Do Something with your dog.... A short rant!

OK I don't have a bunch of time, but just what do you do with your dog? Do you do therapy work? How about competition obedience? Maybe Rally - Obedience, or Agility. I have to be at an elementary school in 25 minutes with my dog Leo so that kids can read to her.

I ask this question because of all the calls I get that the dog barks to much, the dog is crazy, the dog does not pay attention, blah, blah blah. Now I don't mean to sound mean but really you keep the dog in your backyard or in a kennel for 8-10 hours a day and expect a calm well behaved dog? Come on now, that would be like taking a third grader to an amusement park after Mt. Dew and a candy bar and expecting to teach arithmetic... Both are pipe dreams.

So in both cases kid or dog get involved and find something to do together and learn to enjoy each other. Please leave comments on just what you do with your dog to spend time together...

QUOTE OF THE DAY....

“Man is a dog's ideal of what God should be.” ~ Holbrook Jackson

WHAT DO YOU THINK?????

Tuesday, February 21, 2012

WOW I DID NOT SEE THIS COMING... TV STATION FOR DOGS!!!

Check this out. At first I thought to myself, what a complete waste of time and money, but the more I thought about it people don't spend enough time with their dogs during the day. We all know a bored dog usually equals something bad happening so maybe this idea can work. No offense though I will be a skeptic till I see it in action :-) From my point of view a reputable Doggy Day Care (Live in KC?, Check out Broadmore Kennels) is still the best option for those who work all day!

I think I will take a wait and see approach on this one...

Announcement of New TV Channel for Dogs...

Just a thought on Resource Guarding

OK, so picture this... I come into your living room yelling a screaming, grab your purse, take out your wallet and take all the cash in it, and then try and leave. Just how do you think you are going to react? Chances are you are not going to give me a big hug and a kiss on the check are you? However on the flip side of this coin is a dog who has gotten into the trash and found, what in their mind is the "End all Be all" of items and you are now the one yelling and screaming, chasing and maybe even being threatening to the dog... If you are lucky you have a dog who is laid back and has no real issue with the world or its possessions, but if on the other hand you have a dog who considers those things he found to be his, well this could get dicey. Now for my warning to you, if you are the type of person that has to be the boss and you know that to be a good dog owner you must be the leader, own every situation, so on, and so on, and you try to forcible take the item your loving dog might just very well bite you!!!

Now, please, stop and think for a minute. Did the dog really understand that that great tasting piece of chicken bone was off limits? Or is that just us as humans expecting dogs to know our rules without first teaching them. Could we instead have taught a reliable drop it command and practice with trading exercises so that the dog understands that there is no reason to be anxious or nervous around his good stuff because we never give him reason to be?

One last thing, just how smart is it to take things from your dog all the time just to prove you can? Didn't we call those people bullies in school? As always all I want you to do is stop, think and then act. Sometimes the first thing we consider with a dog just plain don't make sense :-)

If you have questions or comments please let them fly, that is after all what this blog is all about....

Factoid...

Canis Major or The Great Dog: - The great dog follows his master, Orion, as he makes his annual journey through the sky. Sirius, also known as the Dog Star, is located on the shoulder of Canis Major. It is the brightest in the heavens, and its name means sparkling and scorching, as it is nearest to the sun during the height of summer.

This picture made me all warm and fuzzy not to mention an attack of the giggles....

TV Anchor is bit by dog live on set...

Many of you have I am sure heard about this terrible situation (If you have not I included the link at bottom) but I want to add my two cents. I posted the video to the Kiss Dog Training page and stressed the importance of sharing this info with your entire list of friends and that we had to try and learn from this sad event. However I found many "dog people" making fun and pointing out the lady should have known better than putting her face in the face of the dog or she should have been able to read the dogs body language better. In the end many thought it was her own fault.
My issue with this is that us "Dog Geeks" have more knowledge and skills than the regular person and it is our job to teach and share events like this to make sure it does not happen again. It really hit me wrong the flippant attitude from some folks. I will end this rant the  same way I did on Facebook and plead and request you all share this, especially to people with kids. The young lady in question, now has her mouth wired shut, so the skin graphs on her lips can heal not to mention 70 stitches, all over something that could have been prevented. So spread the word and help the situation rather than make light of it!

Q & A with Temple Grandin

This interview was done a while ago but it is one of my favorite people in the animal industry, and even though she does not deal with dogs specifically this is really worth a read. I would also recommend reading all of her books they are awesome!

MY DOG HATES GOING TO THE GROOMER!!!
WHAT DO I DO????

Ok, so your dog doesn’t like it’s nails trimmed, mouth touched, tail messed with, hates the hair dryer and could live life happily for the rest of his/her life without another bath. You know it and now so does your groomer L You are getting this tip sheet because both your groomer and I want Fido to accept, if not like, his trips to the groomer. So with a little work on your end and patience on the part of your wonderful groomer, I bet we can improve this situation in no time at all. But where do you start…

About Me

My Photo

Being able to train “any dog” is really not the question to ask.  As far as I am concerned, training people is a much more effective way of solving problem behaviors in dogs. What I do is nothing new or magical. I use basic behavior theory, and positive reinforcement techniques to change behavior or teach proper ones to begin with. There are many ways to train a dog and if done right, none are any better than the other.  I want all of my students to understand that positive reinforcement is, in my opinion, the best and fastest way to teach a dog. Please take the time to go to my website www.muttzrus.com and look at my blog (keep it simple stupid pet blog) and decide for yourself. You should not make training decisions based off of a brochure; talk to at least three trainers; check out blogs and get references; then make your choice. I hope that in the end you will choose me as your trainer
