Dog Bites and Training...

I totally understand the helplessness one feels when there dog bites (whether it be another dog or even worse a person) I understand that you feel confused, angry frustrated and might not even know what to do, but there is one thing I have a hard time with... RESPONSIBILITY! Dog owners are responsible for the socialization and supervision of the dogs they own. If you adopted the dog and don't know the dogs background then taking the dog to the dog park to find out is probably not the best idea. If you don't know how the dog is around unfamiliar children then finding out during a sleep over with your child’s friends might not be a good idea either. A majority of bites come from fear and lack of socialization!!! I do not want to come off as crass or uncaring here but once a dog bites it is us the humans who have now taught the dog that biting will make scary things go away… In many cases this is the point where the phone call comes to me the dog trainer wanting me to fix the situation.

I hate to break it to folks but once a dog has bitten it is virtually impossible, even with training to ever say the problem can ever be completely fixed. Why? Because if the dog is ever pushed past his or her stress/fear threshold they are going to fall back on what has worked in the past, and they have already proven to themselves biting works... Our only real hope is that we can begin to increase the threshold but that is not solution it is an improvement! We must along with training add management.

People must realize that training is only a small portion of the solution... Management is the key to all dog ownership or what I like to call being a dog’s ADVOCATE! Take a deep breath and realize that it was you that allowed your dog to be in a situation it was not ready for and a terrible situation has occurred. You and only you are going to be the one that has to deal with it! You will now have to consider things like public safety! Yes you are going to have to now consider things like muzzles, tethering, crating, isolation and even the possibility of euthanization depending on the severity and number of bites that have taken place. Don't blame the messenger here I would much rather teach folks how to avoid these incidents but in many cases my first contact with dog owners is after not before a bite takes place. People have to understand that as dog trainers our responsibility is not only to our clients but also to the safety of the community in which we live and trust me it is a responsibility we take very seriously.

So if you are reading this and your dog has never bitten then congratulations on a job well done from a socialization and training point of view, or if however your dog has never bitten but you see parts of your dog’s behavior that make you feel nervous now is the time to talk to a trainer! Your goal at this point should be education about these situations and how to manage them before the unthinkable happens. I know this topic is one no one wants to discuss but trust me waiting and hoping the situation will get better, will only result in a conversation with me, or worse a lawyer that no one wants to have...

Divorce as a reason to take pets to a shelter???

This article caught my eye and as a read the article it made sense, but up to that point had never really thought of Divorce as a major driver to the uptick of dogs and cats in shelters. I my view it is just one more reason to realize that marriage isnt supposed to be easy and that nothing in life that is good is easy. So fight  a lot, love a lot, keep talking and for god sakes keep the the dogs, cats and kids :-)

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

I will be doing a phone interview this afternoon about service dogs being attacked by pet dogs... Apparently attacks on these critical furry friends is becoming more common and folks are starting to question why??? My question for you is what do you think the cause might be?

For me I think lack of socialization is the main culprit. Many folks are just not taking time to socialize dogs during the critical socialization period. Not to mention the huge # of dogs in shelters that also missed this critical time period... Hmmmm sounds like a great upcoming blog... Maybe even a book idea :-)

QUOTE OF THE DAY....

“Ever consider what pets must think of us? I mean, here we come back from a grocery store with the most amazing haul - chicken, pork, half a cow. They must think we're the greatest hunters on earth!” - Anne Tyler

AWESOME NEW APP FOR PHONE OR OTHER DEVICE!!!!

How would you like to save your dog’s life for less than a dollar? As we all know it seems like in today’s economy everything costs more, and if you’re household is like mine, pet expenses are a big chunk of your budget. However, I have found an App for my iPad that seriously costs less than a buck and yes; it could easily save one of my dog’s (or cat’s) lives…
The Pet Poison Helpline has been around for years, but until recently your only option was to call and pay for advice if Fido got into something you thought was poisonous. They did develop a website with tons of great info but what if you are not at home or have your laptop (or internet access!) when disaster strikes? Well, they have now developed an App for our “i” gadgets and smart phones that is as simple to use as typing in the name of the item your pet (yes it applies itself to not only dogs but also cats, horses and other animals) has ingested, and then tells you the degree of danger, which animals are affected, what if anything you should do, symptoms, description of the item and even offers a link to make a phone call to the hotline for live help. It is one of the coolest Aps out there! Let me give you a couple of examples…

1.       Arrowhead Vine (Arrowhead Ivy House Plant) Generally mild to moderate poison, toxic to dogs and cats, symptoms drooling, vomiting, pawing at mouth, increased respiratory rate/effort, difficulty breathing. It then gives the link to the hotline and instructs to call the vet.

2.       Gorilla Glue: Generally mild to moderate sometimes requiring surgery, toxic to cats and dogs, drooling, vomiting, loss of appetite, distended stomach, retching, a long description of chemical properties and possible outcomes of ingestion and suggestion of call vet or hotline.

3.       Scorpions: Generally mild to moderate, toxic to cats and dogs, drooling, localized pain, itchiness, redness to the bite area, abnormal heart rate, abnormal blood pressure, dilated pupils, tremors, walking drunk and abnormal eye movement. Talks about types and venom differences and pros and cons of anti-venom, and where the really dangerous types live. Suggestion of calling hotline or vet!

There is an index as well as a search option and it includes plants, pharmaceuticals, poisonous animals and reptiles, household cleaners and toxins, and more. To be honest, the list is really mind blowing. The information is very easy to understand and well written. I have actually started to include the use of the App in my classes as a way to show the dangers that lurk inside our houses for not only humans but also pets. For an investment of only .99 cents, I would say it is a no brainer! But, considering I just stumbled on the app while perusing the App store, I wanted to let you all know it is out there. Now it is your job to go get it to become better educated and then share the App with someone else J Be safe, be smart and have some fun with your Furry four legged friend!!!

About Me

Being able to train “any dog” is really not the question to ask.  As far as I am concerned, training people is a much more effective way of solving problem behaviors in dogs. What I do is nothing new or magical. I use basic behavior theory, and positive reinforcement techniques to change behavior or teach proper ones to begin with. There are many ways to train a dog and if done right, none are any better than the other.  I want all of my students to understand that positive reinforcement is, in my opinion, the best and fastest way to teach a dog. Please take the time to go to my website www.muttzrus.com and look at my blog (keep it simple stupid pet blog) and decide for yourself. You should not make training decisions based off of a brochure; talk to at least three trainers; check out blogs and get references; then make your choice. I hope that in the end you will choose me as your trainer
